When Steve Knopp and his friend were driving through the woods one day, something lying in the road instantly caught their attentions. They slowed the car to see what it was, and were met with a shocking sight.
Lying in the middle of the road was a baby fawn. Unable to move, the animal was in a strange position, leading Steve and his friend to think that it must be seriously injured.
They realized in an instant that they had to act fast, but what came next is incredible.
The fawn’s had collapsed, its body and limbs tangled in an alarming fashion. The men were unsure what to do, but knew they had to act fast.
Slowly, Steve approached while his friend caught everything on camera. As they got closer, they saw that the animal was still breathing. Steve couldn’t see any obvious injuries, and considered picking the animal up.
But when Steve moved the animal, something incredible happened. His actions have led to him being hailed as an animal hero, having saved this fawn’s life.
No sooner had he started to remove the fawn from the road, did it come to life and begin kicking and struggling. When he set it down, it ran off into the woods.
Even though Steve clearly prevented this animal falling prey to other animals or being run over by a car, it’s important to be very careful when approaching and handling newborns. Adding a human smell can actually lead to the mother rejecting her young from there on in. Even if you think the animal has been abandoned, the mother may well be nearby.
According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife: “If you have handled the fawn, rub an old towel in the grass and wipe the fawn to remove human scent.”
However, in this case Steve did the right thing as the fawn was in a dangerous spot and needed to be encouraged to move from the road.
