When José “Pepe” Mujica ended his presidential term in Uruguay in 2015, it wasn’t a typical farewell. There were no grand displays of power or heavily scripted speeches. Instead, the Uruguayan people said goodbye with a mix of affection, admiration, and sincere gratitude — a gesture rarely seen toward a head of state.

Mujica had earned the hearts of his nation — and the world — through his humble way of living and governing. During his presidency (2010–2015), he rejected the trappings of power. He lived in a modest farmhouse on the outskirts of Montevideo, drove an old Volkswagen Beetle, and donated up to 90% of his presidential salary to charities and those in need.

On the day of his farewell, thousands of Uruguayans poured into the streets. Not to protest, not to demand answers, but to applaud and give thanks. In a country where politics often stir up divided emotions, Mujica achieved something rare: he was respected not only by his supporters but also by many of his critics.

The handover ceremony was modest, almost symbolic. Mujica arrived as he always did — without a tie, in a wrinkled jacket, walking slowly. He greeted the crowd, embraced his successor, and stepped down with a calm smile. The people chanted “¡Gracias, Pepe!” and responded with applause and even tears.

What stood out most was the way he left office — without elaborate escorts or armored vehicles. He got into his sky-blue Beetle with his wife, Lucía Topolansky, and drove back to the same home he had never left. That seemingly simple act was also deeply political: a message that leadership should be about service, not privilege.

Mujica left office with high approval ratings, not so much because of major economic achievements — though he maintained national stability — but because of his integrity, his humane discourse, and the rare alignment between his words and actions. In a world where many leaders accumulate wealth and grow distant from their people, Mujica stood out as a moving exception.

Years later, his farewell is still remembered as an example of dignity and closeness. A president who left office just as he had lived: with simplicity, honesty, and in the arms of his people.
