A tight-knit Arizona community is in shock following the disturbing discovery of a longtime pastor found dead in his home under grim and unexplained circumstances.
Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann, 76, was found deceased at his New River residence on April 28. According to Fox10, authorities responded to a 911 call and arrived to find his body in bed, with his arms outstretched and hands affixed to the wall—an unsettling detail that has raised more questions than answers.
Officials have not publicly confirmed the cause of death, but law enforcement sources indicated the pastor suffered significant injuries. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has refrained from disclosing whether a suspect or motive has been identified.
“Based on observations at the scene, it appeared foul play may be involved,” said Deputy Will Jinks of the sheriff’s office. “MCSO is actively investigating. Due to certain unique aspects of the case, we cannot release further information at this time.”
Although investigators have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public, the community has been left shaken.
“We locked our doors last night. That’s not something we usually do,” said neighbor Mike Anders. “Everyone’s anxious, waiting for answers. We don’t know if it was someone close to him or a stranger.”
Pastor Schonemann had been a pillar of the New River community for decades, serving as the leader of New River Bible Chapel for approximately 25 years. News of his death has left parishioners and residents in disbelief.
“Honestly, I was shocked,” said Emily Brean, a local resident. “New River is so small and quiet. I never lock my doors. Why would anyone want to hurt a pastor?”
Schonemann’s son, Randall, described his father as a kind, gentle man with no known enemies and a deep love for his community.
“Our dad had such a positive impact on everyone he met,” Randall said. “He brought joy in the simplest things, like walking through an airport to get his steps in or building creative machines. Words can’t fully express what he meant to us. He is deeply missed.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together what led to the tragic death of a man so deeply respected and loved.
