Speaking to CBS, John said his heart sank when he saw the snout bobbing up and down in the pool. Without hesitation, he jumped into the bottom of the pool while wearing his driver’s uniform and rescued the struggling dog from the water.
“I only thought of the dog at that time,” he said in an interview.
Which is a good thing he did because no one came to save Luca. His family was on vacation. They had only been on vacation for a few hours when John called to tell them what had happened.
A hero with a heart of gold
Despite his heroic deed, John insists he was “in the right place at the right time” and would do it again if needed. Some people may have given up on the situation, but John leapt into action without warning. Later, he had the chance to take a selfie with the dog while wearing his Amazon gear.
The pool is now safely covered in plastic – which is probably a good thing as Luka is clearly an adventurous dog, even in his advanced years. Hope he stays out of trouble from now on!
Either way, Luca and his family will always remember John as the man who heroically risked his life to save an innocent dog. It’s safe to say he’s going to be a local celebrity for months, if not years to come.
