In heartbreaking body camera footage that has since gone viral, the dog is found to be unconscious and barely breathing. In fact, Robert recalls, “I didn’t know if he was alive or not.”
He lifted the distressed dog in his arms and carried him outside. That’s when he and Austin started performing chest compressions to get the dog to catch his breath.
“When she finally started showing up and taking her breath away, it was amazing to me,” Austin said.
“As an officer, that’s our job, and I think any officer would do the same.”
Authorities couldn’t locate the dog’s owners, so they named him “Smoky,” and he’s now at Fulton County Animal Services waiting to be adopted.
Smokey is still coughing, likely from smoke inhalation, but this lucky pup is otherwise healthy, according to a shelter spokesperson.
