The Norton Fire Department of Norton, Ohio shared photos and video footage of a dog struggling in the middle of a nearly frozen pond before being rescued. “This afternoon we were called to a dog through the ice in the pond. It’s always very dangerous, pet owners will always try to save their pet, which is understandable. They do part of the family! Today the result was great for everyone involved!” The firefighters wrote on Facebook.
Colorado has shared an article on what to do if your dog has fallen through the ice and their top tip is to never try to stalk your dog. “If the ice wasn’t strong enough to hold a dog, it wouldn’t be strong enough to hold a person,” said Bodry Fire Chief John McKeon. If you fall at this time as well, it will be harder for the rescue team to provide you and your pet.
“The dogs do a really good job of stressing themselves out so we can get through,” McKeown added. This was the case with Boo, who we saw was able to hold on through the hole in the ice until rescuers arrived to save him.
The publication also warned that:
“Ice thickness is inconsistent. Currents, especially around narrow areas and bridges, are always suspected to be thin ice. Beware of ice around partially submerged objects, such as trees, logs, dams or dam structures Stay clear of cracks, seams and fallen areas and dark areas indicating thin ice.
