Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission is more than just another suborbital journey — it’s a bold statement of progress, diversity, and inspiration. On board the fully autonomous and reusable New Shepard capsule, six remarkable women from diverse fields will cross the Kármán line, the imaginary boundary where Earth ends and space begins.
The date couldn’t be more symbolic: today, April 14, 2025, marks the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova made history in 1963. While Tereshkova’s flight was a political act during the Cold War, today’s mission stands as a cultural, scientific, and human milestone in an era where the frontiers of possibility are constantly being redrawn.
Meet the Crew
The NS-31 crew was chosen not only for their public profiles but for the social and cultural impact each of them brings. Leading the mission is Lauren Sánchez — journalist, pilot, and aerospace entrepreneur. Joining her are five other women whose influence spans music, media, activism, science, and storytelling:

Katy Perry, global pop superstar and philanthropist
Gayle King, iconic CBS broadcaster and journalist
Amanda Nguyen, civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee
Aisha Bowe, aerospace engineer and former NASA scientist
Kerianne Flynn, award-winning film producer with a global perspective
Each crew member is carrying a personal symbol into space. Amanda Nguyen brings an emblem of justice, reflecting her advocacy work, while Gayle King will have a microphone shaped like a shooting star — a tribute to her storied media career.
The Mission: Short in Time, Rich in Meaning
Although the flight will last just 11 minutes, the experience promises to be profound. New Shepard is set to reach an altitude of about 62 miles (100 km), breaching the Kármán line. During this brief but intense journey, the passengers will experience several minutes of weightlessness and gaze at the Earth from above — a view many astronauts say forever changes their understanding of our planet.
The New Shepard vehicle itself is a marvel of modern aerospace design: fully automated, reusable, and engineered with the goal of making space more accessible. The capsule features large windows for an immersive view and is built with cutting-edge safety systems — essential when flying high-profile civilians.
Aisha Bowe’s presence adds a vital technical dimension. As a trained aerospace engineer, she also represents women in STEM. She will be carrying postcards from students around the world and small science experiments focused on human physiology and plant biology in microgravity — research crucial for future long-duration missions.
More Than a Flight — A Message
This mission is part of Blue Origin’s broader vision to shape the future of commercial space travel. Founded by Jeff Bezos, the company aims to position itself as a leader in the new space economy. And with NS-31, it sends a clear and powerful message: space is not only the final frontier of technology — it’s also a platform for inclusion, visibility, and representation.
How to Watch
The launch window opens at 9:30 a.m. EDT / 8:30 a.m. CDT / 6:30 a.m. PDT from West Texas. You can watch the live broadcast via Blue Origin’s official channels or through Space.com, which will be streaming the event in partnership with the company.
