The official cause of death for actor Val Kilmer has been confirmed as pneumonia, with newly released details shedding light on additional contributing health issues. Kilmer, celebrated for his iconic roles in Top Gun, The Doors, and Batman Forever, passed away at age 65 on April 1, 2025, in Los Angeles.

According to TMZ, which obtained a copy of Kilmer’s death certificate on Thursday (April 10), the immediate cause of death was inflammation of the lungs, medically classified as pneumonia. However, the report also listed several underlying conditions, including acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue base, indicating complications from his previous battle with cancer.

Additional contributing factors noted in the document included malnutrition and a tracheocutaneous fistula, a condition related to prolonged tracheostomy. TMZ also reported that Kilmer was cremated on Monday.

Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, had earlier confirmed his passing to The New York Times. She shared that her father was originally diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and had undergone a difficult but ultimately successful recovery.

A Career Defined by Iconic Roles

Val Kilmer made his film debut in 1984 with the spy spoof Top Secret!, but he rose to fame with a series of standout performances throughout the late ’80s and ’90s. He portrayed legendary rock singer Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s 1991 biopic The Doors, donned the cape as Batman in Batman Forever (1995), and cemented his place in pop culture history as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in 1986’s Top Gun.

Kilmer’s final film appearance came in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, where he reprised his role as Iceman for a short but deeply emotional scene opposite longtime friend and co-star Tom Cruise.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel in 2023, Cruise reflected on the moment: “It was incredibly moving. I’ve known Val for decades, and to see him return to that role… he’s such a powerful actor, he just instantly became that character again.”
