Diana Donnarumma walked down the aisle with the father of her late organ donor, Thomas Donnelly Jr. Donnarumma was moved to tears as she held Donnelly Jr.’s hand and walked towards the altar. Her father hugged Donnelly Jr. and took his place for the final few steps. Donnarumma shared that seeing Donnelly Jr. crying made her emotional too. He told her that he was honored to walk her down the aisle and was happy to have another daughter.
Donnarumma, who received a life-saving organ transplant, hopes that her story will highlight the power of organ donation. According to the U.S. government’s Health Resources and Services Administration, each organ donation can save up to eight lives. In the U.S., around 17 people die daily while waiting for a transplant, and every nine minutes, someone is added to the waiting list.
Despite the clear benefits of organ donation, there are still misconceptions about donor eligibility requirements, and some states have cumbersome registration processes that are preventing nearly half of those who support organ donation from becoming registered donors. The New York Times argued in an August 2019 editorial that the most promising way to end the organ shortage is by simply persuading more people to become organ donors.
