Hold on to your horses, as these little foals defied the odds. This 2014 video by Oregon’s KEZI news details the miraculous story of Mocha and Cappuccino, a rarity in the equine word as surviving twins. Transferred from their home farm soon after birth, the pair received special care from the team at Oregon State University’s (OSU) College of Veterinary Medicine.

“I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and this is only the second set of live twins I’ve seen in 30 years of doing equine practice, ” John Schlipf, DVM and assistant professor of Large Animal Internal Medicine at OSU said. “So it’s extremely rare to see this.” Schlipf made sure students at the college recognized what a rare view of nature they were witnessing.

According to Equinews, the Kentucky Equine Research Nutrition and Health Daily, most horse twins fail to survive the first few weeks after conception, while those carried to term can result in the death of one or both of the twins, as well as the mother, during birth. While Mocha and Cappuccino experienced a few health difficulties early in life, the video shows the pair enjoying all their attention and showing of their galloping skills.

“We see a lot of things that don’t go so well, so to see two little foals do as well as these are, it’s a wonderful day that way,” Schilipf said.
