The United States Department of Justice has agreed to restrict the access of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by businessman Elon Musk, to confidential financial information from the Treasury Department.
According to a document filed Wednesday night by Justice Department attorneys, the agreement will allow only two Treasury employees associated with DOGE to access the information in ‘read-only’ mode.
This measure ensures that while they can review the data, they will not be able to modify it, approve transactions, or make any changes.
The proposal still requires approval from Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, who is overseeing the case initiated by three unions that petitioned the courts to suspend DOGE personnel’s access to Treasury information.
The unions argue that DOGE has illegally accessed confidential information on millions of citizens without justification or due legal process.
U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Musk to lead DOGE with the goal of downsizing the federal government and, in theory, saving billions of dollars in public funds.
To achieve this mission, Trump granted Musk access to confidential Treasury data.
According to “Wired” magazine, Musk has hired six young engineers, aged between 19 and 25, with little experience in government institutions and limited résumés.
As a result of their work, Musk has ordered the closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the world’s largest state humanitarian agency, and has canceled contracts for employees in equity, diversity, and inclusion programs.
