In a dramatic political escalation, former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani, following his victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. Trump labeled Mamdani a “100% Communist lunatic” and questioned the legality of his U.S. citizenship.

During a campaign rally in Florida, Trump suggested that Mamdani’s naturalized citizenship could be revoked, alleging that the young politician may have “concealed support for extremist groups” during his naturalization process. He went further, warning that Mamdani could face arrest if he obstructed federal immigration enforcement (ICE) operations in New York City.

“If he tries to stop ICE, then we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump declared to loud cheers from supporters.

▪ Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, 33, is a New York State Assembly member and progressive figure affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America. Born in Uganda to Indian parents, he immigrated to the U.S. as a child and became a naturalized citizen in 2018. He is known for his pro-Palestine advocacy, anti-deportation policies, and efforts to defund the police.

▪ Mamdani Responds: “We Won’t Be Intimidated”

Mamdani responded defiantly, accusing Trump of fearmongering and political bullying:

“What Trump is doing is nothing more than intimidation,” he said at a press conference in Queens. “New York will not be bullied into submission. I will defend the rights of all New Yorkers — regardless of their immigration status.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to keeping New York a sanctuary city and said his administration would resist any federal attempt to use city resources for mass deportations.

Trump’s remarks sparked outrage from civil rights groups and progressive lawmakers, who described the threats as “undemocratic and authoritarian.” Legal experts also questioned the constitutionality of revoking citizenship based on political beliefs or past affiliations.

Meanwhile, Trump supporters praised the move as a “necessary crackdown” on what they see as dangerous far-left influence in urban politics.

▪ High-Stakes Election Symbolism

This conflict marks a turning point in the 2026 election cycle. Mamdani’s win represents a new wave of young, left-wing leaders reshaping the Democratic Party, while Trump continues to rally his base with hardline stances on immigration, law enforcement, and nationalism.

The showdown between Trump and Mamdani may set the stage for a broader national debate on identity, citizenship, and the limits of federal power.
