Tyler Reed, the proprietor of Triton Aquatic Training, gained viral attention after sharing a video on TikTok and Instagram on May 23, 2023. The clip featured him reciting “mermaid mantras” to a toddler who had just left the water and was on the verge of tears.

In his caption, Reed emphasized that swim lessons might be intimidating, but reciting motivational mermaid mantras empowers the children to believe in their abilities. Speaking to Good Morning America, the swim instructor expressed his mission to dispel the notion that 2-year-olds and babies are incapable of learning to swim or save themselves.

The TikTok post quickly amassed over 52 million views, drawing numerous comments applauding Reed’s skill in comforting the tearful toddler. One user humorously requested a pep talk, saying, “I know how to swim but can you just give me this pep talk, please.” Another commenter praised Reed, contrasting it with their own family’s approach to swimming, and one user lauded him as a real hero.

Many users also admired the toddler’s bravery and words, with one noting, “She is braver than me. I’m 43 and I still can’t swim 😭😭😭.” Reed’s Instagram followers joined the conversation, with a fan commending the parents for instilling valuable swimming skills in their children.
