“We needed solar, water recycling, and other eco-friendly features to minimize our carbon footprint and offset the truck’s fuel consumption,” he explained.
Unable to afford a new truck, he opted to purchase one from eBay and embarked on a ground-up construction project. Over the past five years, he tallied approximately $181,000 in expenses for the endeavor.
The hefty cost is justified by the trailer’s multifunctional layout, encompassing various rooms such as an office, kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, library, and garage. The kitchenette boasts a microwave oven and a refrigerator, all powered by solar energy. Additionally, a spiral staircase leads to the second floor.
The mobile home boasts private spaces, including a 75-inch 4K TV with surround sound for movie nights, and a satellite internet service to ensure a reliable connection.
Clayton highlighted the importance of the internet for evening relaxation and entertainment, while he personally spends much of his time reading in the library. The luxurious touch is provided by jetted tubs, adding to the comfort of their unconventional abode.
Reflecting on the extensive time invested in building the mobile home, Clayton expressed both regret and satisfaction. He acknowledged that the five years dedicated to construction could have been spent on the road with a smaller, less elaborate setup. However, he emphasized the joy he found in the process.
“That was five years out of my life that I could have just gone out and bought something smaller and less able and then gone out and spent that five years on the road. But on the other hand, I really enjoyed doing it,” he shared.
He concluded with a philosophical perspective on life: “It’s absolutely guaranteed you’re going to die, so make the most of living between now and then. That’s what we’re doing.”
