Frank Previte, the lead singer of Franke and the Knockouts, may not be a household name, but he co-wrote one of the most iconic songs in movie history.
In the late ‘80s, Previte was approached by Jimmy Ienner, the music supervisor for the film “Dirty Dancing,” and asked to write a 7-minute-long song for the movie.
Previte was initially hesitant, but he had an epiphany while driving and ended up co-writing “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.
The song went on to become a massive hit, reaching number one on the Adult Contemporary and Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also played a pivotal role in the success of the “Dirty Dancing” movie.
In a 2020 interview with American Songwriter, Previte revealed that Patrick Swayze, the movie’s lead actor, told him that the song “changed everything for them for the better.”
Fans from around the world continue to keep the song’s legacy alive by recreating the famous dance scene associated with the song. The enduring popularity of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is a testament to the power of great music to touch people’s lives and to live on through the years.
