What was supposed to be a proud moment for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team turned into an awkward viral mishap on Monday — thanks to Senator JD Vance.
During a celebratory visit to the White House honoring Ohio State’s national championship victory, Vance attempted to lift the 35-pound trophy during the presentation ceremony. Unfortunately, the moment didn’t go as planned. The senator lost his grip and accidentally dropped the trophy, which split into two pieces right in front of players, staff, and press cameras.
A Fumble Heard ‘Round the Internet
Footage of the drop spread like wildfire on social media, with users roasting the senator and turning the incident into a meme goldmine. Some even called it the perfect metaphor for the state of the Republican Party — or more pointedly, the Trump wing of it, with which Vance is closely aligned.
“JD Vance breaking the trophy feels like a preview of what happens when you let people who don’t know what they’re doing take over the country,” one user tweeted. Another quipped, “He couldn’t hold it together — literally.”
Despite the online mockery, others took the moment in stride, laughing it off as nothing more than an unfortunate (and very public) mistake.
Buckeyes Roll With It
Thankfully, the Ohio State players kept things lighthearted. According to reports from those in the room, several team members laughed it off and even joked that it was the shortest-lived championship trophy in college football history.
No official statement has been made by the White House, but sources say the trophy will be repaired and returned to the team. The ceremony, however, will likely be remembered more for the drop than the celebration.
As for JD Vance, he hasn’t publicly commented yet — but if the internet has anything to say about it, he’s not living this one down anytime soon.
