According to a report from CNN News, before they met online and then fell in love, Dan discovered that he suffered from kidney disease that would likely require a transplant at some point in his life. However, Dan thought he wouldn’t need the new college until years later.
Unfortunately, his health deteriorated, which forced him to consider a kidney transplant as soon as possible.
In the end, Lisa was the perfect match. The doctors said, according to CNN, the odds of this match are one in 100,000.
On August 22, Dan found new life when his wife Lisa donated one of her kidneys to him. The operation was performed at UCSF Medical Center near the couple’s home in Auburn, California. The transplant was a success as Dan’s body accepted Lisa’s kidney.
The couple found a new appreciation for life as a result of what they went through together. Dan says just holding their son Jasper’s hand has taken on new meaning. The Summers family is now a strong advocate for kidney donation.
Dunn told CNN that due to the lack of donors, many patients have to undergo dialysis to stay alive. A kidney from a living donor can provide up to 30 years or more of good health if matched.
