Sesfontein, Namibia — A tragic incident has shocked the world of luxury tourism and wildlife conservation, after German businessman Bernd Kebbel, 59, was killed by a lion while camping at the exclusive Hoanib Skeleton Coast resort, located in a remote desert region of northwestern Namibia.

The attack occurred when Kebbel, accompanied by his wife and a group of friends, left his tent during the night to use the bathroom. It was then that a lion lurking nearby surprised him. Despite efforts by other guests to scare the animal away, the attack proved fatal, and Kebbel died before help could arrive.

Namibia’s Ministry of Environment confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to clarify the exact circumstances of the attack. Local police were called to the scene, and an official report is expected to be released in the coming days.

A Life Dedicated to Conservation

Bernd Kebbel was not only known for his entrepreneurial ventures—owning Off-Road-Centre, a store specializing in safari and off-road vehicle gear—but also for his strong commitment to wildlife conservation. According to the Daily Mail, Kebbel was an active philanthropist who supported several environmental initiatives in Namibia.

His death has sparked deep sorrow among those who knew him and within ecotourism communities, as he had dedicated part of his life to promoting responsible and sustainable travel in Africa.

Wildlife Risks in Remote Luxury Settings

Hoanib Skeleton Coast is renowned for offering luxury accommodations in one of Africa’s most pristine and untouched wilderness areas. With just eight tent-style suites, the lodge promises visitors a fully immersive nature experience. Its website openly warns of native wildlife in the area, including predators like lions, elephants, and hyenas.

This tragic event underscores the inherent risks of such tourism experiences and raises important questions about safety measures, even in high-end resorts. Wildlife experts consistently advise travelers not to venture out alone, especially at night, in regions known to host large and potentially dangerous animals.
