No one can deny Ralph Fiennes’ incredible performance as Voldemort from the fourth *Harry Potter* film onwards, but if there’s one portrayal that remains unforgettable for fans, it’s Gary Oldman’s Sirius Black in *The Prisoner of Azkaban*. Over the years, this third installment has solidified its place as the best film in the entire saga, and for good reason. Under Alfonso Cuarón’s direction, the story transcended the realm of magical adventures for teenagers and revealed a world that was as dark as it was captivating. From the breathtaking flight on Buckbeak to the revelation of Sirius’ true role in Harry’s life, this film proved that the saga could be so much more.

Sirius Black was first introduced as a dangerous enemy, only to later become the closest thing to a father figure Harry would ever have. That’s why fans were shocked when Gary Oldman described his performance in the film as “mediocre.” Many were outraged, seeing it as arrogance or an attempt to downplay his most commercially successful role. However, the truth was far from that.

Oldman later clarified his words, explaining that he never intended to disrespect the film or the character. “I don’t want to offend *Harry Potter* fans—I believe these films and this character are very beloved,” he stated. His comment came from the self-criticism that, according to him, every artist should have. “If I ever watched one of my performances and thought, ‘My God, I’m fantastic in this,’ that would be a sad day for me.”

The actor also revealed that his lack of knowledge about Sirius’ future influenced his portrayal. “When I took on the role, I only had *The Prisoner of Azkaban*. I didn’t know how the character would evolve in the later books. If I had known the full story from the beginning, maybe I would have approached it differently—added different shades to the performance.”

With this explanation, Oldman made it clear that his criticism wasn’t directed at the film or his character, but rather at the circumstances in which he had to portray Sirius. And while he may be his own harshest critic, for fans, his Sirius Black remains one of the most memorable characters in the entire saga.
