Unfortunately, when the delivery man saw the two children alone watching TV, he jumped to conclusions and called children’s services.

“I was like, OK, OK, I’m going to see if he leaves his pack on the porch,” said Leverault. I went to the bathroom and five minutes later three police cars arrived.

Leverault was afraid of losing her children. While all went well for the Liverault family, she attributes the incident to an increase in “paternal disgrace”.

“I felt afraid.”

Parental shame is occurring at an alarming rate. This is where people rush to make judgments about what parents do, even if they don’t take the time to get all the information about what’s really going on.

“People today feel ashamed to let their children play outside their home in an unfenced yard and let the child walk alone to school,” says Dana Pointes, editor of Parents magazine.

Data shows that child abuse decreased by 4%, while calls about potential child abuse increased by 12%. This means that of the 3.5 million calls to Child Protection Services each year, only 679,000 are true cases.
