The flight crew came up with the idea of asking over the intercom if anyone on the plane knew sign language. A 15-year-old girl named Clara Daly, who learned sign language because her dyslexia meant she struggled with other foreign languages, came forward, CBS reported.
The young woman introduced herself to the man and reached out to sign in his palm so he could “read” what she was saying even though he couldn’t see it. She stayed with him throughout the flight, chatting, laughing and warming the hearts of the passengers around her. The man asked her many questions and she answered them patiently.
Another passenger, Lynette Scribner, took a photo of their encounter and shared it online. Within days, the story had been shared more than 600,000 times, CBS reports. However, Clara remained very modest:
“I got so much attention that I did something that felt so natural to me,” she said. “I just wanted to help.”
As the Calabasas Courier reported in 2019, Clara never ends up doing good in this world. In her second year, she was involved in multiple political movements. For example, she defends women’s rights.
“My goal is to make a difference and see change in this world,” Clara says. “It won’t make a difference if you don’t start somewhere, and even the smallest things matter.”
