When it’s freezing cold and snowing outside, the first thing you wanna do is cuddle yourself with a warm blanket and drink a hot beverage. You sit inside your house waiting for the arrival of spring. This goes too for animals. For example, cows.
During the cold winter season, farmers choose to keep their cattle indoors so they’re as comfortable as possible. In fact, 65% of Dutch cows craze in the summertime, so you can imagine how antsy they must feel waiting to be back outdoors.
Thanks to the rainfall, the grass becomes greener and tastier for cows. But when it’s getting cold, everything changes. So in the Netherlands, the cattle have to be kept inside barns where it’s toasty warm and they receive a constant supply of hay.
Now the springtime is finally here, the cows are too excited to be let free to their pastures. In Holland, it became an annual event farmers call “Koeien in de wei,” which translates to cows in the pasture. It is held on a Saturday in April and people come to witness this heartwarming tradition. The moment, the excited cows are finally able to feel the fresh air and the delicious fresh grass under their hooves.
