Upon arriving in the alley, Lang noticed a distressed woman waving him over, as reported by CBS 2 Chicago. “I look out the window, and I just see this woman, hysterical, waving her arms,” he recounted. She directed his attention to the dresser drawers, one of which held something of immense value.
Inside, Lang discovered a newborn baby, carefully wrapped in blankets. The infant had been placed in the bottom drawer, accompanied by a rosary left by an unknown person. Lang shared, “We don’t know who put the baby there, but whoever did left a rosary. My mind went to ease as soon as I saw that baby moving and crying. It was almost surreal.”
According to CBS 2 Chicago, the baby couldn’t have been more than a couple of days old and still had its umbilical cord attached. As a father of two, Lang felt a deep connection to the child, stating, “I carried him into the ambulance when they arrived, and I didn’t want to let him go. He did open his eyes and looked around the ambulance, smiled a little bit, holding onto our fingers. He looked me right in the eye. Those big brown eyes, I’ll never forget it. Holding that little guy wrapped up in my arms, and I just kept thinking how familiar it was.”
The ambulance transported the newborn to Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Lang returned home. Yet, he took to social media, urging parents to consider the consequences of their actions and advocating for them to bring unwanted babies to a hospital, firehouse, police station, or church. Lang’s thoughtful words garnered praise, and some hopeful couples even reached out, expressing interest in adopting the baby. Lang reflected, “It resolidifies my faith in humanity.”
