Old rumors of a rivalry between the two Hollywood giants resurface after Pitt’s unexpected comment.

For decades, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio have stood as two of the biggest names in Hollywood. Since the 1990s, they’ve carved out legendary careers: Pitt with roles in Legends of the Fall, Seven, and Fight Club; DiCaprio with global hits like Titanic, The Aviator, and The Departed, thanks in large part to his enduring collaboration with director Martin Scorsese.

Despite their parallel paths and unmatched stardom, the two actors didn’t share the screen until 2019, when Quentin Tarantino brought them together in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood. Set in late-1960s Los Angeles, the film became an instant homage to the golden age of cinema. Their on-screen chemistry was one of the movie’s standout elements, so much so that director David Fincher has since confirmed a spin-off focused on Pitt’s character is now in development.

But behind their seamless dynamic on screen, there may have been tension in the past. During a promotional interview for the film, a reporter from Extra caught Pitt off guard with a direct question about a long-standing rumor: had he really once filed a restraining order against DiCaprio in the ’90s?
“Yes, I had a restraining order against him for a while… for a 1994 incident we don’t like to talk about,” he said, laughing.
While the tone was clearly playful, the comment reignited speculation online and in entertainment media. Back in the mid-90s, Pitt was going through a very public breakup with actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Around the same time, tabloids began hinting that DiCaprio had been spotted with Paltrow, though no confirmation ever surfaced. Still, whispers of a feud between the two stars lingered for years.

Whatever may have happened then, it seems long forgotten now. During the filming of Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, both actors appeared to enjoy a strong working relationship, and their mutual admiration in interviews suggests any real or imagined conflict is firmly in the past.
Was Pitt joking, or subtly confirming an old falling-out? Either way, his offhand remark continues to fuel the mystique surrounding two of the biggest legends in modern cinema.
