In a significant milestone for marine conservation, two beluga whales have been rescued from an aquarium in China and relocated to a marine sanctuary in Iceland. This effort was carried out by the charity organization Sea Life Trust, aiming to provide them with a better quality of life in a more natural environment.
A Life in Captivity
The belugas, named Little Grey and Little White, spent nearly a decade at the Changfeng Ocean World aquarium in Shanghai, where they performed shows for the public. They were originally captured near the Russian coast when they were about one year old. Later, they were transferred to a Russian research center before being moved to the Chinese aquarium.
A 6,000-Mile Journey to Freedom
The rescue and transfer of the belugas was a logistical challenge, involving a 6,000-mile journey by land, air, and sea. Specially designed equipment was used to ensure their safety throughout the trip. Upon arriving in Iceland, they were placed in an acclimation pool in Klettsvik Bay, allowing them to adjust to their new environment before being released into the marine sanctuary.
A New Home in Klettsvik Bay
The marine sanctuary in Iceland is the first of its kind for beluga whales and provides a much more suitable habitat than captivity in aquariums. Although the belugas cannot be fully released into the wild due to their reliance on human care, this environment allows them to swim and dive freely in a much larger space with more natural conditions.

This rescue highlights the growing concern for the welfare of captive marine mammals.
