Learning that she had a quadruple pregnancy was also very worrying because of the risks and the high risk of complications. Katie’s obstetrician and healthcare professionals told her she would have a 50% risk of health risks and premature birth with such a high risk pregnancy.
Selective reduction was introduced, in which one or more fetuses would be removed, but the Ferraro family decided to proceed as is with the safety of all four.
It is not uncommon for women with multiples to go to bed early due to the pregnancy of the fetuses on the mother’s body. Many women spend more than half of their pregnancy in hospital. Not Katie, though. At nearly 31 weeks, Katie was still at home caring for Molly, her one-year-old daughter at the time.
Even when in bed or in hospital, wearing multiples is risky in terms of childbirth. It often takes twice as many employees to care for a twin. So Katie’s medical team at Sharp Healthcare didn’t know the exact time or date, but they knew they had to be ready to deliver the quadruplets at a moment’s notice.
When Katie was 34 weeks pregnant, her team decided to schedule a C-section rather than continue to risk noticing that moment of delivery. It took 20 medical professionals, but Katie safely delivered her quadruplets – Charlie, Claire, Henry and Dillon – without complications.
