Málaga, Spain | June 2025

Abdou Ngom, the young Senegalese man who touched hearts around the world in 2021 with a viral image of him being comforted by a Red Cross volunteer in Ceuta, has died in Málaga, Spain. He was around 30 years old. His death has reignited conversations about migration, dignity, and the European Union’s border policies.

From Iconic Hug to Tragic End

In May 2021, Abdou was one of thousands of migrants who swam from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during a major migration surge. Exhausted and emotionally overwhelmed upon reaching the shore, he was embraced by a Red Cross volunteer named Luna, a moment captured in a photograph that became a global symbol of humanity amid crisis.

Despite the compassion that image conveyed, Abdou was immediately returned to Morocco under Spain’s controversial “hot return” (devolución en caliente) policy, without legal or humanitarian review. Human rights organizations condemned the practice as unlawful and inhumane.

Return and New Beginnings in Spain

Three years later, in 2024, Abdou successfully re-entered Spain by boat through the Canary Islands. He eventually moved to Barcelona, and later Málaga, where he worked in construction and tried to rebuild his life quietly and far from the media spotlight.

However, in early June 2025, Abdou began experiencing severe headaches and vomiting. He passed away shortly afterward in a Málaga hospital. The cause of death is still under investigation, pending autopsy results.

False Rumors and Family Repatriation

Social media platforms circulated unverified claims that Abdou had once again been deported to Morocco and died there. These reports have been officially denied. Both the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) and the Red Cross confirmed that he died in Málaga and that arrangements are being made to repatriate his body to Senegal, where his family resides.

A Human Legacy

The image of Abdou being embraced on the Ceuta shore remains one of the most powerful visual testaments to the human dimension of migration in Europe. His untimely death has once again drawn attention to the plight of migrants and the ethical responsibilities of European border policies.

“He was a young man simply searching for safety and dignity. His death should remind us all of our shared humanity,” read a statement from CEAR.
