A rare and mesmerizing sight unfolded off the coast of Monterey Bay, California, as a “super pod” of more than 2,000 dolphins was captured on video, playing and gliding through the ocean about 18 kilometers from the harbor.
Marine biologist Colleen Talty from Monterey Bay Whale Watch explained that the dolphins may have gathered for several reasons: to defend themselves from predators, feed on a shared food source, or simply to socialize.
This extraordinary event featured the elusive northern right whale dolphin (Lissodelphis borealis), a species notable for lacking a dorsal fin—one of only two dolphin species with this trait. These dolphins typically inhabit deeper, offshore waters, making their appearance in Monterey Bay all the more remarkable.
The breathtaking moment was captured by Evan Brodsky, captain and videographer for Monterey Bay Whale Watch’s private tours. According to The Associated Press (AP), the sighting occurred last Friday at midday during a routine research trip.
Brodsky described the northern right whale dolphins as “smooth” and jokingly compared their graceful leaps to “flying eyebrows.” The pod was a vibrant mix of marine life, including light gray calves and hundreds of Pacific white-sided dolphins, adding even more diversity to the stunning spectacle.
What began as a small group of about a dozen dolphins rapidly grew into a massive super pod of thousands, leaving Brodsky and his two crew members awestruck. “It was a deeply moving experience,” Brodsky shared in an interview with AP.
Such large gatherings are rare, as northern right whale dolphins usually form smaller groups of 100 to 200 individuals, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation, a nonprofit organization. However, these dolphins are known for their sociable nature and often mingle with other species, like Risso’s dolphins. In fact, Brodsky had previously filmed a super pod of Risso’s dolphins last month using a drone.
Northern right whale dolphins are sizable creatures, reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing over 90 kilograms. Their gregarious behavior and tendency to interact with other species make them a fascinating subject for researchers and marine life enthusiasts alike.
These dolphins have become a unique attraction for visitors to Monterey Bay, who travel from around the globe hoping to glimpse them in the bay’s deep underwater canyons.
