As the Daily Mail reports, a cruise ship off the coast of Norway was hit by high-speed winds and high ocean waves that nearly capsized. The ship, which carried more than 1,300 passengers, gave those on board a chilling experience. Everything was fine until the weather changed and it started pushing the ship towards the rocks near the shore.
The crew immediately requested assistance from the Norwegian Coast Guard. Help arrived minutes later as the Coast Guard brought in 5 helicopters to ferry some of the passengers to safety.
Despite the bad weather, the Coast Guard managed to airlift about 500 people. According to reports, 20 people were injured during the ordeal.
Fortunately, nothing happened to the rest of the passengers as the crew managed to restart one of the failed engines and regain control of the ship. They slowly guided her to safety.
Most of the passengers feared for their lives and thought the ship would sink like the Titanic. Some people have even imagined falling from the windows of a luxury cruise ship into the sea. The good news is that none of this happened thanks to the combined efforts of the crew and the rescue team.
“It was very windy – a member of the crew had to hold you down because you could have exploded sideways,” Roberta Thak, one of the passengers, told the Daily Mail. “I said to myself that I had to stay calm, maybe because I was traveling alone, I had to take care of myself… It could have been completely different. It was a tight call.”
