Instead of just taking Rachel’s order so that she could get her food and go home to feed her kids, the employee handed her a note that read, “can’t do a full order at the window, too busy.”
Rachel refused to leave and was recording the entire exchange on her phone. The worker then began telling Rachel that she needed to come inside to place an order, as the drive-through line was simply too congested.
Rachel still refused to leave, as she was adamant that she would not be denied service just because of her physical limitations. The worker refused to serve her still and called the local police instead. Rachel says that the police didn’t even get out of their cars to communicate with her, instead just waving her along to leave.
Rachel posted the video on social media along with a description of the events that transpired. Outrage and support poured in, along with attention from the local media. The worker was soon terminated by his employer after the company expressed their sincere apologies for what Rachel experienced.
But not everyone is on Rachel’s side. In the video, the worker makes mention that he too is disabled. Some disabled commenters on Reddit disagreed with how Rachel handled the situation, insisting that she wasn’t being refused service, but rather simply being asked to place her order inside. Some are speculating that this is just a story of a disabled man being fired because of a disabled woman who was wrongfully claiming discrimination.
