With the help of Rosie Bushell, Betty manages to organize a beautiful get-together in an atmosphere that exudes love. Sitting at a table with roses and heart-shaped balloons with Only You by The Platters playing in the background, Betty waited patiently to see her love again.
When Kenneth walked through the door and saw Betty sitting there waiting for him, he couldn’t keep his tears from falling.
“Kenneth was emotional every day and he missed her so much,” Bushell told Yahoo News. “He was crying for us every single day.”
Betty and Bushell had another surprise for Kenneth as they rolled up their sleeves. With Betty finally out of quarantine, the two share a room.
Bushell added, “Every time I went to see them, they’d smile. They’re so happy…”.
Their great-granddaughter posted a video of their reunion on Twitter.
“My grandfather moved into a nursing home 5 weeks ago and my grandmother couldn’t live without him so I decided to move in and the nursing home did it for them, my true heart,” she wrote.
Speaking to HuffPost, Bushell spoke about Betty and Kenneth’s private relationship.
“There wasn’t a single dry eye as the staff cheered and celebrated the wonderful couple’s reunion,” she said. “They’ve been married for 71 years, together for 76 and have never quarreled. Talk about dating goals!”
The care assistant also spoke about her rewarding work in the nursing home.
“Honestly, the work is amazing,” Bushell told HuffPost. “We are not a nursing home, we are a family and we will do anything for the family staff and our residents.”
Dementia is a condition in which a person experiences deterioration in memory and general cognitive abilities, which makes it difficult to perform daily tasks. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 50 million people currently suffer from dementia.
Its most common form is Alzheimer’s disease, and the disease usually affects older adults – although early dementia accounts for about 9% of all cases.
This condition can make life difficult not only for patients, but also for those around them. Dementia can have a physical, social, psychological and even financial impact on jobs and has become a significant cause of disability and dependency for older adults worldwide.
Fortunately, Kenneth and Betty will now get the care they desperately need in the nursing home – and the reunion will undoubtedly make things even better.
