Nicole Kidman on Her Children with Tom Cruise: “They Have Freely Chosen Scientology, and as a Mother, My Only Duty Is to Love Them”

Nicole Kidman is not only one of the most celebrated actresses of the 21st century, with unforgettable performances in films like Dogville, The Others, and Lion, but she is also known for her deep commitment to her craft. Whether undergoing physical transformations for intense roles or pushing herself to the brink—like in the Prime Video action thriller that redefines the female role in genre films, or the acclaimed musical that left her filming many scenes in a wheelchair—Kidman has never shied away from a challenge.

However, two particular films stand out for blending her personal and professional lives: Days of Thunder, where she first met Tom Cruise, leading to one of Hollywood’s most iconic marriages, and Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick’s provocative masterpiece, often cited as a factor in their eventual separation.
But if there’s one factor more frequently linked to the unraveling of their relationship, it’s Scientology—the controversial religion founded in 1953, known for requiring large financial contributions, demanding full personal disclosure, and encouraging followers to cut ties with anyone outside the faith. Allegations over the years have included invasive surveillance, with reports that Cruise, with the help of the Church, once tapped Kidman’s phone to monitor her private conversations.
Despite the controversy surrounding Scientology, Nicole Kidman has largely remained silent about the matter, particularly when it comes to her two adopted children with Cruise, Isabella and Connor. In a rare and candid moment, however, the Big Little Lies star spoke to Australian outlet Who, offering a glimpse into how she navigates such a deeply personal topic.
“I’m very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships,” Kidman stated. “I know 150% that I would give up my life for my children, because that’s my purpose.”

On Isabella and Connor, now adults and practicing Scientologists, Kidman expressed a message of respect and unconditional love: “They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made the choice to be Scientologists, and as a mother, my job is to love them.”
She continued with a powerful reflection on parenting: “I’m an example of tolerance, and I believe that no matter what your child does, the child has to know there is love, and that love is always available to them.”
Kidman concluded with a heartfelt message for all families: “I think that’s so important, because if you take that away from a child—in any relationship, in any family—I think it’s wrong. So that’s our job as parents: to always offer unconditional love.”
