Renowned writer Richard Powers, winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Overstory, recently shared his thoughts on prominent figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, Powers revealed details about his latest novel, Playground, released just a week ago, in which he created a character inspired by Musk.

While developing this character, Powers realized that, in fictional terms, it was not entirely believable. To address this, he attempted to humanize the figure by incorporating psychological traumas and everyday struggles. Similarly, in his novel Bewilderment, he crafted a character based on Trump. Expressing his concerns, the author stated, “What Trump and Musk can do together to democracy is worse than our worst nightmares.”

Powers also criticized the influence of certain elites on society, arguing that this oligarchy knows how to manipulate the state and seeks to dismantle it. He pointed out the paradox that, despite being among the most privileged individuals, their followers believe they can free them from other elites.

Regarding technological advancements and Silicon Valley’s growing influence, Powers remarked that the libertarian fantasy promoted by the tech world is more deeply connected to capitalist ideology than any previous movement. He also asserted that artificial intelligence represents “a total victory” for capitalism.

Powers’ comments come at a time when the relationship between Trump and Musk has been under media scrutiny. The two recently participated in a joint interview on Fox News, where they defended plans to cut government spending and showcased their alignment on various issues. (elpais.com)

The growing influence of figures like Trump and Musk in both politics and technology continues to spark debates about the future of democracy and the role of elites in today’s society.
