In the realm of politics, some may believe that flashy slogans and human rights principles are fixed truths. However, they are often skillfully used as tools to deceive nations — much like the luxurious watch in the story told by Russian President Vladimir Putin when he responded to Western accusations of being a “dictator obsessed with militarization.”

This symbolic story carries a powerful message. It tells of a young man tasked with guarding his family’s farm while his father and older brothers went to the market. One day, a group of strange men approached him. He kept his rifle aimed at them from a distance, but they spoke sweetly, claiming they meant no harm. In reality, they were a gang of experienced thieves.

To distract the young man, they showed him a beautiful, expensive watch, praising its elegance. Fascinated by the watch, the young man showed interest in owning it. Sensing his desire, the gang offered him a trade — the watch in exchange for his rifle.

The young man hesitated but ultimately told them to “come back another day.” When his father and brothers returned home, he recounted the story, describing the watch’s beauty and how tempted he was. His father responded with a sharp lesson:

“Give them your weapon and take the watch. Then, when they attack you, steal your cattle, loot your farm, and assault your mother and sisters — look at your beautiful watch and proudly tell them the time.”

This blunt response wasn’t just a lesson for a naive young man; it was a clear metaphor for the current global situation. Many nations are offered “watches of democracy,” “human rights,” and “freedom,” but the real price is often their weapons — whether literal, like military strength, or symbolic, like national unity and political awareness.

From Putin’s perspective, the West doesn’t always present these “values” out of genuine concern or goodwill. More often than not, they are tools to infiltrate and destabilize countries, preying on those naive enough to embrace slogans without questioning the hidden motives behind them.

The story emphasizes that armament — both physical, through strong armies, and symbolic, through national solidarity and political vigilance — is the first line of defense against any form of exploitation. How can a nation defend itself if it trades its “rifle” for a “fancy watch”? How can a country protect its sovereignty if it abandons its strength in exchange for empty promises?

The message is clear: Don’t surrender your country to enemies disguised as champions of freedom and democracy. Don’t trade your strength and independence for hollow slogans. When the time comes, that beautiful watch won’t protect you from the conspiracies tearing your nation apart or the thieves looting your homeland.

Ultimately, this story is not just about Russia or the past — it’s a mirror for any nation to look into and ask the crucial question:

Are we ready to hold on to our rifle, or will we fall for the watch that marks the time of our downfall?
