In the Brdy region of the Czech Republic, a colony of beavers accomplished in just two days what authorities had been trying to implement for seven years. The project aimed to revitalize wetlands in a former military base and was valued at over 30 million Czech korunas (about $1.2 million). However, bureaucracy and a lack of funds delayed its execution.

Without needing permits or paperwork, the beavers got to work. “They created the necessary biotope conditions practically overnight,” explained Bohumil Fišer, head of the Brdy Protected Landscape Area Administration, in an interview with Radio Prague International. Interestingly, the rodents built their dam in an old diversion canyon originally constructed by soldiers for military purposes.

The original plan was to drain the land and allow it to recover naturally, but prolonged negotiations over land ownership and permit processing stalled progress. Meanwhile, the beavers took matters into their own paws. “They saved us 30 million korunas. They built the dams without any documentation or costs,” Fišer remarked, amazed at the animals’ efficiency.

For Jiří Vlček, a zoologist working with the local administration, the difference in timelines between humans and beavers is striking: “Beavers can build a dam in one or two nights. Meanwhile, people need to obtain building permits, approve projects, and secure funding.”

Beyond speeding up the process, the beavers’ intervention has significantly benefited the ecosystem. “The newly created wetlands and water pools will serve as excellent habitats for rare species such as stone crayfish, frogs, and other organisms that thrive in wetland environments,” noted the ecologists monitoring the restoration.

Jaroslav Obermajer, head of the Central Bohemia office of the Czech Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection, praised the beavers’ expertise:
“Beavers always know best. The places where they build their dams are always the right ones—far better than when we design them on paper.”
