As reported by the Washington Post, Taylor acquired the house in 2004 but encountered financial difficulties, eventually relinquishing it to the previous owner. Unfortunately, her former landlord became entangled in a mortgage fraud scheme, leading to Berendt purchasing the property. However, Taylor faced challenges with doubled rent and accumulating maintenance issues, and her dream of homeownership seemed elusive as she encountered numerous obstacles.
In February, the neighborhood made an earnest appeal to Berendt, requesting a delay in eviction, and the landlord not only complied but also reduced the asking price to $250,000. “People were moved by Miss Linda’s plea and were eager to take action,” Fahlstrom stated. “Her story was so compelling that it inspired a united effort.”
Taylor could never have anticipated the overwhelming support from her neighbors. Several community members collaborated to create a campaign website and fundraising platform named “Save Linda’s Home,” where individuals could contribute any amount they wished. The most significant donation came from a local church, amounting to $200,000.
After approximately four months, the residents of Powderhorn Park managed to raise $275,000, ensuring that Taylor had the funds needed to purchase her home and cover repair and utility expenses. The 70-year-old woman was deeply moved by her community’s kindness, remarking, “I always knew my neighbors cared about me, but I never realized how much.
