Hardships And Heartache

The renowned singer has been using her influential platform to promote the well-being of others, specifically by raising awareness on the dangers of bullying. In March 2014, Dion opened up about being a victim of bullying in a video that was part of a campaign by Fondation Jasmin Roy to help educators in Canada combat bullying in schools.
The video, which was released with an English translation through the Canadian edition of Hello Magazine, showcased Dion’s empathy towards bullied children and highlighted the importance of addressing the issue before it destroys their dreams.
Dion’s personal connection to the issue of bullying deepened when her own children became victims of bullying. As a mother, she could understand the heartbreak of parents who see their children suffer from the effects of bullying. Despite the challenges, Dion has remained steadfast in her efforts to combat bullying, ending the video with a powerful declaration of “no” to bullying.
Despite her seemingly unbreakable spirit, Dion’s world was shattered when her husband, Angélil, faced yet another bout of cancer. He underwent surgery for throat cancer in December 2013 and eventually stepped down as Dion’s manager six months later. As his cancer progressed, Angélil passed away on January 14, 2016, just two days before his 74th birthday, leaving behind Dion and their family to mourn his loss.
Her Disappearing Frame

As a victim of bullying herself during her time at school, Dion has had to watch her children experience similar issues and has made an effort to help them through their tough times. The songstress said, “As a mother, I can also understand the despair of parents who can no longer see light in their child’s eyes or joy in their child’s heart because they have no friends at school.” At the end of the powerful video, Dion raised her hand and declared: “I say ‘no’ to bullying.”
Despite her personal struggles, Dion remained strong and continued to pursue her career even after the loss of her husband. René Angélil faced yet another cancer scare, and although Dion stayed strong as she grieved his loss, she started to look very thin and frail. Critics became skeptical of the star as she continued to lose weight following Angélil’s death.
However, in January 2021, Hype Life Magazine reported that Dion’s new image came from a newfound passion for ballet. The singer had recently added the sport “to her already rigorous dance training sessions,” according to Hype Life. Dion has continued to shut down rumors about her weight loss and has revealed that it came from her rigorous dance training sessions and a healthy lifestyle. She also addressed her personal insecurities through the song “Imperfections” off her 2019 album “Courage,” singing, “I got my own imperfections, I got my own set of scars to hide,” throughout the English, adult-contemporary track.

The music video for “Imperfections” was released on Sept. 26, 2019, and showcased Dion’s passion for fashion. Shot entirely in black and white, the video features scenes of Dion wearing luxurious and extravagant clothing, as well as vulnerable moments of the singer removing her makeup. The video’s artistic and sincere tone complements the song perfectly.
In a September 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dion addressed those who had criticized her body in the past. When asked if there was anything wrong with her body, Dion flexed her muscles and explained how normal it is for one’s appearance to change with age. She reminisced about her rounder face when she was 12 years old and how she has always been thin.

After spending many years in the public eye, Dion has grown accustomed to receiving constant feedback and criticism. She acknowledges that criticism is an inevitable part of the job, stating, “If you don’t want to be criticized, you are in the wrong place.”
Although Dion has experienced incredible highs in her career and has continued to display her beautiful and powerful voice, she has also encountered criticism and personal struggles. She has faced insecurities, struggles, and heartache over the years.
