The day after this third litter was born, the owner posted an announcement on Facebook with two pathetic photos showing Nana and her newborn baby. He was walking away and wanted no more. Interested neighbors saw their chance to get to work.
You see, these neighbors have been doing their best to help these dogs for quite some time. They brought lots of food, organized rabies injections and even went so far as to build a shelter for Nana to protect her from the elements.
Animal Control has been called several times about animal abuse by the pet owner, but nothing has been done to help these poor dogs.
When the neighbors heard the dogs were ready, they immediately got busy. These terrible chains were finally removed. Then all the dogs were moved from the building to a safe place.
A neighbor immediately adopted the six-month-pregnant female. Helpful neighbors then called Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter in Salisbury, North Carolina, to help Nana and her nine newborn dogs.
Faithful Friends agreed to receive the family and contacted Mr. Bones & Co., a New York-based rescue organization specializing in adoptions. Mr. Bones & Associates has agreed to cover the cost of caring for the mother and puppies while they stay at Friends of Faithful and transporting them to New York when the puppies are old enough.
The puppies were given names taken from the Peter Pan story and Nana enjoyed caring for Tinkerbell, Tiger Lilly, Jane, Wendy, John, Michael, Lisa, Curley and Peter Pan. Good maternal instincts kept these pups alive until help arrived and continue to lovingly care for them until weaning time.
While the dog family was staying at Faithful Friends, Mr. Bones’ staff flew in twice to familiarize themselves with the rescued dogs and gain their trust so that the next move wouldn’t be too difficult for Nana.
When the puppies were fully weaned, Chris and Doug from Pilots N Paws transported the 10 dogs to New Jersey where they were waiting for a truck to take them to new foster homes.
