“This doesn’t belong to me; I need to call a police officer,” Gordon shared.
Meanwhile, one of the police officers at White Lake, Lt. Matthew Ivory, attested to the unwavering honesty Gordon exhibited throughout the situation.
“It never really crossed her mind to do anything other than turn it over,” Ivory said.
After a thorough police investigation, it was revealed that the money belonged to newlyweds. Ivory recalled discovering cards and gifts from the wedding that had taken place on the same day. The total amount of cash found in the bag was $14,780.
Fortunately, the police were able to track down the couple and return the money to them. Ivory acknowledged the significant impact the money could have had on Gordon’s life, especially considering her lack of transportation.
Despite her heroic act, Gordon remained humble, stating she believed she “didn’t do anything special.” For her, it was simply doing what she considered right. “I was taught if it doesn’t belong to you, you don’t keep it,” Gordon told WXYZ.
Recognizing Gordon’s integrity, one of the police officers’ wives initiated a GoFundMe campaign for her. In just a few weeks, they raised over $80,000 for Gordon.
In February 2023, thanks to the funds raised on GoFundMe, Gordon acquired a new Jeep Compass.
“I am floored. I am having a hard time keeping it in. I am just so excited,” Gordon expressed.
Undoubtedly, Gordon stands as a symbol of integrity and selflessness, and she received the well-deserved recognition and support!
