Police horses are valuable members of police departments all across the country. Thanks to their size and power, officers are given advantage that other people don’t have. An officer is able to see everything around him when he’s on the back of his horse.

Police horses also help officers to patrol many areas, especially those where cars can’t easily go, like in between traffic and down alleys. They’re useful  to control crowds, but there’s another important purpose to their role: They connect officers with the public.

The officers of the New Orleans Police Department’s Mounted Unit depend on their horses to help them keep locals and visitors safe year round. Their main focus is crowd control – and never is that skill more needed than during the city’s massive annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Officer Jones has a very special horse named Ace, and the pair garner lots of respect when they move through the crowds on Bourbon Street. Ace and his policeman pal know how to break up a rowdy gathering, but sometimes after a long hard day at work, a horse just wants to kick up his heels and dance!

A few people thought the horse in this video might be untrained or afraid of the people, but the NOLA horses are specially trained to be calm in crowds and the video below seems to verify this, so don’t worry about the horse, just enjoy the show!

So the entire incident happened when a group of men were blocking the path with their dancing and singing, and this enthusiastic horse decided it was finally time for him to have some fun time too.  So, he threw caution to the wind and showed the world that in New Orleans, even the police horses know how to get down and boogie with the best of ’em!

Ace couldn’t help to bust some moves when he heard his favorite song “Talking,” played by the TBC Brass Band. The majestic animal is not going to miss it. the big guy turned from serious to joyful little puppy dropping some pretty adorable moves!

Just look at the crowd’s reaction to the horse’s awesome dance moves. They’re cheering the horse and rider on, and treat them to a great round of applause when they decide to move on with their patrol.

Officer Jones and Ace are a great tribute to the city of New Orleans. This fabulous video shows that the city’s love of music and dancing can spontaneously occur at any time, even for cops and their horses.

Wait until the very end to see how Ace shows his gratitude to his cheering fans for allowing him to get jiggy and let his inner unicorn shine. Awww, what a beautiful animal!
